Happy Friday, I’m on the last day of the blog tour for The Chain today with my thank you to Tracy Fenton over at Compulsive Readers for having along and sorting out my copy of the book.
Little look at the blurb and then I will tell you what I thought:
Blurb
VICTIM.
SURVIVOR.
ABDUCTOR.
CRIMINAL.
YOU WILL BECOME EACH ONE.
YOUR PHONE RINGS.
A STRANGER HAS KIDNAPPED YOUR CHILD.
TO FREE THEM YOU MUST ABDUCT SOMEONE ELSE’S CHILD.
YOUR CHILD WILL BE RELEASED WHEN YOUR VICTIM’S PARENTS KIDNAP ANOTHER CHILD.
IF ANY OF THESE THINGS DON’T HAPPEN:
YOUR CHILD WILL BE KILLED.
YOU ARE NOW PART OF THE CHAIN
Now I jumped at the chance to read the book after seeing the blurb and what it was all about. We Meet 13 year old Kylie, waiting at the bus stop for the bus to school when she is Kidnapped. Won’t lie my heart was in my mouth, Oh yeah this book gets going from the very first page. Rachel is a woman in her thirties, who after battling cancer and getting divorced is finally getting her life back on track, even starting a new job teaching and is looking to the future. When she receives the call that would send any parent into a spin : Her daughter has been kidnapped and in order to get her back she must follow the instructions and not break The Chain. How far is Rachel willing to go to have Kylie back? Firstly she has to pay a ransom into a bitcoin account, and it’s way more money than Rachel has and she has to find a way to raise it and fast, with every second that passes it not only puts Kylie in danger but herself and Kylie kidnappers and their son. I got totally sucked into this from the word go and had a million and one thoughts racing through my mind. Rachel is one hell of a woman, she goes from having to go into see her oncologist after battling cancer and having chemotherapy she has been in remission but something has shown up on her bloods and she needs to be seen. Now she has to find a way to do what she has been asked to do my The Chain. My heart totally broke for Rachel and I often found myself thinking Where would I get that kind of money, could I kidnap someone else’s child and terrify the poor kid and put another mother through what I would be going through to save my child’s life. I would move heaven and earth for my children but i just could not picture myself in this situation.
The members of The Chain allow Rachel to have someone to help her and she brings in her ex brother -in-law Pete. Pete has his own demons to face and battles to get through each day without some sort of hit. Rachel is distraught at what her daughter will be going through and dreams of breaking a link in The Chain, if she did the consequences don’t even bare thinking about given what happened to the last family who tried to break the link.
I was heavily invested in Rachel’s story and was willing her on every step of the way. Rachel doesn’t feel like she is strong, she feels weak and a failure but you never how strong you are until being strong is the only option you have. I would love to have some of Rachel’s courage and kick ass attitude.
The actions and aftermath of The Chain have a lasting effect on them all.
A engrossing read that had me curling my toes and on tender hooks. Each chapter packed a punch and left you wanting more. Time flies when you hooked on what’s going to happen next.
Now I was already looking into what I posted on social media and The Chain just added to the paranoia, not only that but at one point when I lost eye contact on my son and had a mini heart attack until he popped back round the corner.
My first Adrian McKinty novel I am ashamed to say but I plan to change that and read more of his work. McKinty sucked me in, had me gripped and on the edge of my seat, a book that should be on everyone’s summer reading list. Gripping, thrilling , nothing like you will have read before, once you pick this up you won’t want to put it down again.
Another book, that I hated having to put down. Trying to read as much as possible one chapter before bed turned into Good Morning, beautiful sun rise and the end of the book. An Omg what did I actually just read.
