Base Cowboys : Mark Farrer

CowboysIts my turn on the blog tour for this cracking set of novella reads combined in the one book. My thanks to Emma at damppebbles for having me along .

Okay firstly we will take a look at the blurbs for all three Novella’s before I get started.

Blurbs

BASE COWBOYS is a comic crime trilogy set in the Scottish Borders. It is the sixth laugh-out-loud book in the CULLEN series written by Borders author Mark Farrer and will appeal to readers of Christopher Brookmyre, Carl Hiaasen, Nick Spalding or Tom Sharpe. The book tells the stories of three amoral ne’er-do-wells, their unfortunate and accidental intrusion into Cullen’s life, and the imaginative ways he finds of ensuring (his) justice is done:

Dirty Barry
The first casualty of adultery is… the tooth!
Barry Sullivan is a sordid dentist who resorts to blackmail to keep his string of married women in line. But now Cullen has toothache – and a very different interpretation of the dental code of practice.

Bronchial Billy
Meet Billy – the fastest gun in a vest.
Billy is a geriatric slum landlord desperate to win first prize in a Country & Western gunfight competition. But his trigger-happy birthday celebrations provoke Cullen, and now Billy must pay. Will he meet his High Noon at the Grand Ole Opry or will he go out with a bang? Whatever happens, there’s sure to be fireworks.

Pale Ale Rider
There’s trouble brewing…
Tyler is a teenage tearaway with the eyes of a serial killer. But when he decides to rob Big Paul’s local pub, he gets more than he bargained for. Will Tyler lose his bottle, or just get smashed? Cullen thinks he’s seen dead eyes like those before, and now he has a plan: he’s not bitter, he’s just a little twisted.

All three sound great don’t they? Well I thought so, this is a laugh out loud yet quite emotional all at the same time and I take my hat off to Mark. I really enjoyed all three and at points I was laughing out loud which did earn me some strange looks but oh well all worth it.

Now we all the know The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, well let me introduce to you The Bad, The Evil and The Selfish one.

Dirty Barry is a bit of a dirty dog to be fair, I mean who does that to married woman? I know they shouldn’t be sleeping with him in the first place but the guy is a bit of a creep who thinks he is a bit of a lothario, when Cullen gets toothache however it becomes a different ball game for Barry as Cullen will bring Justice to anyone who needs taught a lesson and Barry needs taught a lesson.

Billy is a slum landlord and well nobody likes them. laughs, sex and violence in this novella.

Tyler is our star in Pale Ale Rider. Now who would dare to try and rob Big Paul’s pub, well Tyler fancied his changes but Big Paul also happens to be the best friend of our main man Cullen.

Cullen is a bit of a loner but does have someone he trusts and that’s big Paul together they make the perfect pairing. Together they dynamic duo bring justice or as I like to call it Karma to anyone that needs taught a lesson.

I really enjoyed reading Base Cowboys, the three novellas through it rather than one novel was a nice way to mix things up a bit oh and did I mention it has its fill of laugh out loud moments. It was hard keeping a straight face once I had gotten over the giggles I still had a smile etched on my face. Mark has written well rounded characters, and a cracking read to boot. A Concise and funny read although some people who are easily offended might not enjoy the humour but I am not easily offended and loved it.
